Make a Change

Each BVA eye doctor Oklahoma uses the latest refractive technologies and surgical techniques to help patients suffering from refractive problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, and/or astigmatism. As a result of refractive surgery, many of our patients are able to greatly improve their vision and eliminate or reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

Refractive surgery is a term used to describe vision correction procedures that surgically change and improve the way light rays enter the eye and are focused on the retina. The goal is to achieve sharper, clearer vision. This may decrease or eliminate your dependency on glasses or contacts.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, uses the accuracy and precision of the excimer laser to alter the shape of the cornea in an attempt to change the way the light is focused or refracted by the eye, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lens.

LASIK eye surgery Oklahoma improves vision safely and precisely by reshaping the cornea to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Vision improves within minutes, and most patients eventually enjoy 20/20 vision or better after treatment.

The most commonly performed elective surgery in America, LASIK combines the advantages of two sophisticated technologies: the accuracy of the excimer laser and the benefits of lamellar keratoplasty. It is safe, precise and highly successful. Thanks to LASIK, millions of people worldwide have experienced the wonder of clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK offers many improvements over other refractive surgery procedures. These include little or no post-operative discomfort, immediate vision improvement, and the ability to drive or return to work quickly — sometimes as soon as the next day. Most patients require no corrective eyewear after surgery (although patients over 45 often need reading glasses).

Your LASIK procedure will be performed at the local nJoy Vision Center. For more information call, or e-mail us today.

Frequently Asked Questions

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?

The best way for you to determine this is with a thorough exam from your eye doctor. Appropriate candidates must be at least 18 years old, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma. Laser vision correction can treat a very broad range of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

I’VE HEARD A LOT OF GREAT THINGS ABOUT LASIK. WHAT CAN LASIK DO FOR ME?

Laser vision correction has proven overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses; however, the degree of improvement may vary among individuals. How well and how quickly your vision improves depends on how well you heal and the severity of your prescription. Most laser patients with mild to moderate prescriptions do achieve 20/20 vision or are within 1 to 2 lines of 20/20 vision on an eye chart. This means they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play sports, or watch movies and TV.

I HAVE HEARD ABOUT CUSTOM LASIK. WHAT IS THIS PROCEDURE?

Custom LASIK is a procedure that involves the use of a wavefront analyzer and enables your surgeon to customize the Conventional LASIK procedure to your individual eyes. This customized procedure can result in patients seeing clearer and sharper than ever before.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

There are risks with the laser vision correction procedure. However, the chance of having a vision-reducing complication has been documented in a number of clinical studies to be minimal.

WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?

Most LASIK patients usually see quite well the day following their procedure and may be able to resume most of their normal daily activities, but patients with higher prescriptions may recover more slowly. Although the speed of visual recovery depends on personal healing patterns, most patients notice dramatic visual results within the first few days following their procedure.

Alternatives to LASIK

There are alternatives to LASIK surgery – other than glass or contacts – that may be a better option for some patients. As such, your eye doctor Oklahoma may recommend:

PRK

ICL

alternatives

PRK is a vision correction procedure that alters the shape of the cornea to change how light enters through the eye. By changing the cornea’s shape, PRK can fix nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

PRK is similar to Lasik in many ways, and produces similar outcomes. PRK is FDA-approved and is a safe and stable procedure for qualified patients. PRK and LASIK are both considered “laser vision correction surgery,” but each is a little different when it comes to advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL is that it can permanently correct your vision, yet no natural tissue is removed in any way during the procedure. If, for the unlikely reason you need or wish to remove your Visian ICLs in the future, your doctor can accommodate you.

Visian ICL has been approved in Europe since 1997 and in the U.S. since 2005. In that time, over 700,000 eyes have been implanted with Visian ICLs by certified, specialized surgeons with a study showing a 99% patient satisfaction rate.

This procedure takes 20-30 minutes or less and has a fast recovery time. Most people are able to resume daily activities in just a few short days with clearer vision.
