What Glaucoma Treatment OKC Options Are Available?

Glaucoma Treatment OKC

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and requires carefully managed eye care OKC. This condition can eventually lead to vision loss. Although there is no cure for glaucoma at this time, there are treatment options available that can help manage the symptoms.

Glaucoma Treatment OKC

Eyedrops

There are various medications available for glaucoma. These topical options may be used in conjunction with other treatment methods available, including eye surgery Oklahoma.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser treatment is typically the next line of defense when drops alone fail to achieve results. These treatments are Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and Cyclophotocoagulation (CPC).

SLT is ideal for patients with open-angle glaucoma. It helps increase fluid drainage by stimulating specific pigmented cells.

CPC reduces the eye’s intraocular pressure using two different types of laser technology: transscleral cyclophotocoagulation and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation. They work by changing the ciliary body behind the iris.

Incisional Eye Surgery Oklahoma

A tube shunt is added through incisional eye surgery. With this procedure, a tube with a drain pouch is placed in the eye to help drain the fluid and release some of the pressure. This treatment method is often used when others fail.

Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery

Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) refers to several different types of surgeries that use small incisions instead of bypass methods. There are five MIGS procedures.

Trabectome® is beneficial for open-angle glaucoma. The Trabectome® device will remove debris and tissue from blocking the flow of fluid in the eye, which reduces pressure.

Ab-Interno Canaloplasty (ABiC) is an eye surgery requiring only a microscopic incision. A catheter is placed in the drainage canal, and viscoelastic is injected into it to clear away any blockages.

The Gonio-Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (GATT) procedure is best for patients with juvenile glaucoma or open-angle glaucoma. Similar to ABiC, GATT uses a catheter. With GATT, however, the catheter is removed so that the drainage tissue can create an outflow of fluid that is more direct.

CyPASS is a relatively new surgical device that a doctor will implant into the suprachoroidal space, which accounts for 20 percent of the eye’s outflow system. This procedure is also approved for cataract surgery.

iStent is another small surgical implant inserted into the drainage angle using a magnification device. It helps to bypass the fluid into the less damaged tissue, where it can flow downstream.

Durysta

Durysta is the newest breakthrough for treating glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is a biodegradable implant that is smaller than the i on a dime. The implant contains 10 mcg of bimatoprost that is injected into the nasal side of the eye. It will then deliver the medication regularly, removing the need for eye drops. Over time, roughly six months, the implant will dissolve.

Each glaucoma treatment OKC has its pros and cons. Additionally, what is effective for one patient may not work for another. Your eye doctor will help determine the best course of action based on your condition.
