What Is PRK?
PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is a type of laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap, making it an excellent option for patients with thinner corneas or those who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK. At BVA Advanced Eye Care, we offer PRK as a safe and effective alternative to help patients achieve clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. How Is PRK Performed?
PRK is performed by first removing the thin outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, to expose the underlying corneal tissue. Then, a specialized excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea, correcting the refractive error. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap. After the procedure, a protective contact lens is placed over the eye to promote healing, and the epithelium naturally regenerates within a few days. The procedure typically takes about 15 minutes per eye, and although the recovery is slightly longer than LASIK, PRK offers excellent long-term results.
What Are the Benefits of PRK?
PRK offers several advantages for individuals seeking long-term vision correction:
- No risk of complications related to a corneal flap
- Ideal for patients with thin or irregular corneas
- Provides lasting results for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
- Lower risk of post-operative dry eye
- Suitable for those with active lifestyles due to the absence of a corneal flap
